Florida in summer means heat, the Atlantic, and a tan you'll still see in October. Melbourne sits on the Space Coast, an hour from Orlando and 45 minutes from Kennedy Space Center, with white sand beaches and prices that remind you this is not a resort city. TUI UK fly non-stop from London, Manchester, Belfast and Glasgow this summer, with return fares from £343.

💰 How far does your money go?
Melbourne is not Miami. A plate of food at a local restaurant runs around $18. A beer at a beach bar costs $5–7. An ice cream on the boardwalk is $4. The Space Coast hasn't been sold to tourists the way the Gulf Coast has, and it shows in the bill.
☀️ The weather
July in Melbourne, Florida is hot and humid. Daytime temperatures reach 32°C, with a heat index closer to 39°C once the moisture in the air is factored in. Afternoon thunderstorms are common and usually short. The sea sits at 28°C. Evenings stay around 26°C.

🎯 What to do
The Space Coast earns its name.
Kennedy Space Center — NASA's visitor complex, 45 minutes from Melbourne. Walk under the Saturn V rocket, see Space Shuttle Atlantis up close, and sit through a launch simulation. One of the genuinely impressive things you can do in the US.
Brevard Zoo — Feed a giraffe, kayak around the Africa exhibit, and zip line over South America. A proper zoo, not a tourist trap.
Sebastian Inlet State Park — One of the best surf breaks on Florida's east coast. Also good for snorkelling, kayaking, and fishing off the pier. 30 minutes south of Melbourne.
Melbourne Beach — The Atlantic side, facing east. Fewer crowds than the Gulf Coast, cleaner water, and real waves. The beach that Melbourne residents actually use.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Melbourne puts you between Orlando to the west and open Atlantic to the east.
Orlando — One hour by car. Disney World, Universal Studios, and every theme park in between. Commit a full day, or three.
Canaveral National Seashore — 30 minutes north. Twenty-four miles of undeveloped Atlantic coastline with no hotels and no gift shops. Just beach.
St. Augustine — 2 hours north. The oldest European-established city in the US. Cobbled streets, Spanish colonial architecture, and a fort on the water.
Miami — 3 hours south. A strong option if you want to end a road trip in style, with the Florida Keys somewhere in between.
