Your connection in Istanbul is 14 hours. Most passengers settle into the departure lounge and make their peace with it. What they do not know: Turkish Airlines will put you in a 4-star hotel in the city, pick you up when it is time, and send you on your way the next morning. No extra charge.

What Is Turkish Airlines' Free Layover Hotel?

Turkish Airlines runs two separate free hotel schemes depending on the length of your layover. Both apply to international-to-international connections via Istanbul Airport.

Transit Hotel: layovers of 9 to 20 hours

  • Economy: minimum 12 hours
  • Business: minimum 9 hours
  • What's included: hotel accommodation, breakfast, return airport transfer
  • How to claim: no advance booking needed — go to the Turkish Airlines hotel desk on arrival

Stopover Hotel: layovers of 20 hours to 7 days

  • Economy: 1 free night in a 4-star hotel
  • Business: 2 free nights in a 5-star hotel (Le Méridien, Marriott, Sheraton, Sofitel)
  • What's included: hotel, breakfast, return transfer
  • How to claim: apply via the Turkish Airlines stopover portal at least 72 hours before departure

Passengers from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore get an extra night: 2 nights economy, 3 nights business.

Who qualifies?

  • Both flights must operate on a Turkish Airlines TK code
  • International-to-international connections only — no domestic legs
  • Both flights on a single ticket
  • Award tickets do qualify

Important: for the transit hotel (under 20 hours), you must be on the shortest available connection to your destination. If Turkish Airlines offered a 3-hour layover and you deliberately chose the 14-hour one, you will not qualify.

Do You Need a Visa to Use the Turkish Airlines Layover Hotel?

The hotels are located outside Istanbul Airport — which means you need to enter Turkey to use them. Most European nationalities require a Turkish e-visa.

UK and EU passport holders both need one. The cost is around $35 and it takes minutes to obtain online at evisa.gov.tr. Apply before you travel.

Factor the visa cost against the value of a free 4-star hotel night in Istanbul, which typically runs £120 or more. The math works.

Why Most Passengers Miss It

Turkish Airlines flies to more countries than any other airline. Istanbul is a natural hub between Europe and Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Millions of passengers transit through it every year. A very small proportion know about the free hotel.

The transit hotel requires no pre-booking — you claim it on arrival. For most passengers, the sign to the hotel desk simply goes unnoticed. The stopover program takes a bit more planning, but rewards it with a free night in one of Europe's most compelling cities.

How to Claim the Turkish Airlines Transit Hotel (under 20 hours)

  1. Book a Turkish Airlines itinerary with a natural layover of at least 12 hours in Istanbul (9 hours for business class). Both flights must be TK-coded, on a single ticket.
  2. On arrival in Istanbul, do not go to the transit lounge. Follow the signs to the Turkish Airlines hotel desk.
  3. Present your boarding pass and passport. Your room is assigned on the spot, subject to availability.
  4. A shuttle will take you to the hotel. Istanbul Airport is large and the hotels are outside — allow 60 to 90 minutes for the transfer each way.
  5. Return to the airport with enough time before your next departure. The hotel desk will advise on pickup times.

How to Book the Turkish Airlines Stopover Hotel (20+ hours)

  1. Use the multi-city flight search on the Turkish Airlines website. Build a 20+ hour gap between your two international segments via Istanbul.
  2. Book the ticket. Both flights must be on TK codes.
  3. Apply at the Turkish Airlines stopover portal at least 72 hours before departure. Enter your surname and booking reference. Hotel quotas are limited — apply as early as you can.
  4. If you need a Turkish e-visa (UK, most EU nationalities), apply at evisa.gov.tr before you travel.
  5. On arrival, follow the hotel signage or present your confirmation at the desk.

One practical note: Istanbul Airport is one of the largest airports in the world. Allow 30 to 40 minutes just to move through the terminal before you reach the desk.

Need Help?

For any questions about eligibility or hotel availability, you can contact the Turkish Airlines hotel desk directly at hoteldesk@thy.com.

A 14-hour layover in Istanbul does not have to mean 14 hours in a terminal chair. It can mean a 4-star hotel, a hot breakfast, and your first proper look at a city that most people pay to visit. You just need to know where the desk is.
