You book a flight from Europe to Southeast Asia with a stopover in Beijing. You expect to sleep in a terminal chair. What you do not expect is a free hotel, a hot breakfast, and a car to pick you up. Air China offers all three through its free transit hotel program. Most passengers never claim it.
What Is Air China's Free Transit Hotel?
Air China's Transit Accommodation service covers one night in a hotel, breakfast the next morning, and a return transfer between the airport and the hotel. No upgrade required. No extra payment. It's built into the fare. You just have to book it.
The free transit hotel is available at six cities:
- Beijing (Capital Airport and Daxing Airport)
- Shanghai Pudong
- Chengdu Tianfu
- Hangzhou
- Tianjin
- Wenzhou
Who qualifies for the free layover hotel?
Your ticket must start with 999 (Air China's own ticketing code) and both flights must operate under the CA code.
- Business and First class passengers qualify automatically, regardless of loyalty status.
- Economy passengers must hold PhoenixMiles Gold or Platinum elite status.
Not eligible: award tickets, free tickets, infant tickets, and fare classes O, I, X, or N.
How long does your layover need to be?
Your stopover must be between 6 and 30 hours. For same-day connections (arriving and departing on the same calendar date), you need to land before 8:00 a.m. with at least 6 hours before your next flight.

Why Most Passengers Miss It
Air China runs hundreds of long-haul connections through its Chinese hubs every day. A large share of those passengers are transiting between continents: Europe to Southeast Asia, Australia to the UK, Africa to Japan. The airline built this program to make long layovers manageable rather than miserable, competing with airlines like Turkish and Qatar that offer similar perks.
The problem is visibility. Most passengers book through third-party sites and never see the option. Air China does not push it. But it's there, it's free, and it works.
How to Book the Air China Transit Hotel
- Book a qualifying Air China itinerary with a stopover of 6 to 30 hours in one of the six cities. Make sure both flights carry the CA code and your ticket starts with 999.
- Once you have your ticket, open the Air China app or website and go to Manage Booking.
- Look for Additional Services or Transit Hotel. Enter your ticket number to check eligibility.
- Book at least 24 hours before your arrival (50 hours for the Deluxe tier). Do not leave it late: rooms fill up.
- On arrival, follow the transit hotel signs or go to the Air China transit desk inside the terminal.
One practical note: customs and immigration in China can take up to two hours. If your stopover is right at the 6-hour minimum, that does not leave much time. A layover of 8 to 10 hours gives you breathing room and still qualifies.
A 12-hour stopover in Beijing does not have to be twelve hours in an airport. It can be a free hotel, a hot breakfast, and eight hours of sleep before the second leg. You just have to ask.
