More than half of Argentines trace their origins back to Italy. Walk around Buenos Aires and you'll feel it in the food, the architecture and the way people argue. But what arrived from Italy in the 20th century became something entirely different: bigger steaks, longer evenings and a fraction of the price. Aerolineas Argentinas flies non-stop between Rome and Buenos Aires, with return fares for July starting at €789.

💰 How far does your money go?
A craft beer in Palermo costs around €3.50, roughly half what you'd pay at a bar near the Colosseum. A choripán from a street grill is under €5. A full steak dinner at a parrilla, with wine, runs about €27. Most travellers find they spend €50–70 a day all-in, eating and drinking well the entire time.
☀️ The weather
July is winter in Buenos Aires. Temperatures sit between 11 and 15°C during the day, dropping to around 7°C at night. Dry, mild and often sunny. No brutal cold, no humidity and no crowds. It's the most comfortable time of year to explore the city on foot.
🏨 Where to stay
Buenos Aires covers a lot of ground. Palermo and Recoleta are the best bases for most visitors.

A landmark hotel on Alvear Avenue, open since 1932. French-style rooms, a rooftop pool and afternoon tea that rivals anything in Europe.
🎯 What to do
Buenos Aires rewards slow exploration. Stay for a week and you'll still have a list.
Tigre Delta: Take the commuter train from Retiro and spend an afternoon on the river islands of the Paraná Delta, 50 minutes from the city centre.
Teatro Colón: One of the world's great opera houses. Take a guided tour or, better, book a seat for a performance. The acoustics are extraordinary.
San Telmo Sunday market: Antiques, street performers, empanadas and live tango in the street. Best on a Sunday morning. Budget a few hours.
La Bombonera: Catch a Boca Juniors match at their home ground in La Boca. Even if you don't follow football, the atmosphere is unlike anything in Europe.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Buenos Aires is one of South America's great hubs. Most of the continent is reachable from here.
Tigre Delta: River islands and wetlands, an hour north by train. Good for a half-day escape from the city.
Colonia del Sacramento (Uruguay): Cobblestone streets and colonial architecture, an hour away by fast ferry across the Río de la Plata. A completely different pace.
Iguazú Falls: One of the world's great natural wonders, on the border with Brazil. Two-hour domestic flight from Buenos Aires. Worth the extra days.
Mendoza: Argentina's wine capital, backed by the Andes. Two hours by flight. Outstanding Malbec and mountain scenery.
Bariloche: Lakes, forests and ski slopes in Patagonia. About 2.5 hours by plane. In July, the ski season is at its peak.
Fourteen hours of flying, six time zones, and steak cheaper than pasta in Rome. Search the dates before they move.
