The Indian Ocean is closer than you think. Iberojet flies non-stop from Madrid to Mauritius in around 11 hours, arriving on the other side of the world without a single connection. At €233 one way, this is one of the cheapest fares to the Indian Ocean we've seen from Spain.

💰 How far does your money go?
Local food is cheap. A plate of dhall puri or bol renversé at a local canteen costs between €3 and €5, less than a third of what you'd pay for a menú del día back in Spain. A Phoenix beer, the island's go-to lager, runs about €2. Street food snacks from the market start at €0.50. Eat like a local and €30 a day covers food and drink with change to spare.
☀️ The weather in September
Mauritius in September sits in the dry season. Temperatures reach 26°C during the day and drop to 18°C at night. The sea is 23°C, with around seven hours of sunshine each day. Comfortable, uncrowded and without the tropical humidity that builds later in the year.

🎯 What to do
Clear water, volcanic hills and a cultural mix unlike anywhere else in the Indian Ocean.
Blue Bay Marine Park — Snorkel or take a glass-bottom boat over one of the best coral gardens in the Indian Ocean. Sea turtles, tropical fish and healthy reef.
Seven Coloured Earth, Chamarel — A natural phenomenon in the south of the island: dunes of volcanic soil in seven distinct colours, from red and purple to green and blue. Genuinely unlike anything you've seen.
Dolphin watching, Tamarin Bay — Early morning boat trips off the west coast give you the best chance of seeing spinner and bottlenose dolphins swimming freely. One of the island's signature experiences.
Port Louis Central Market — The capital's main market is the best introduction to Mauritian food. Dhall puri, samosas, fresh fruit, local spices. Cheap, loud and brilliant.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Mauritius is a gateway into the Indian Ocean, not just a destination.
Rodrigues Island — A quieter, more remote island about an hour by Air Mauritius. Coral lagoons, white sand and almost no crowds.
Reunion Island — Less than an hour by plane. An active volcano, dramatic calderas and over 900 km of hiking trails. Completely different from Mauritius.
Seychelles — A short connecting flight away. 115 tropical islands of granite and jungle. If you're already in the Indian Ocean, it's the natural next step.
