💰 How far does your money go?
A Pad Thai from a street vendor in Bangkok costs around €1.60. A cold Chang beer at the corner shop is €1.50 — less than half what you'd pay for a caña back home. A full sit-down meal at a local restaurant (not a tourist one) runs to about €4. The €20 you'd spend on a menú del día in Madrid keeps you fed for two days here.
☀️ The weather
Bangkok in June sits at 29–33°C. September and October are similar: 27–32°C. This is rainy season — expect afternoon downpours that arrive hard, last about an hour, and then disappear completely. Mornings are almost always clear. The trade-off: fewer crowds, cheaper accommodation, and that lush deep-green Thailand the brochures never quite capture.
🏨 Where to stay
Bangkok covers every budget without breaking a sweat.
Lub d Bangkok Silom — 8.6/10 · From €28/night The go-to for budget travellers. Two minutes from the BTS Skytrain, social vibe, and solid facilities for the price.
Amara Bangkok — 8.8/10 · From €70/night A polished four-star in Silom with pool, spa, and breakfast included. Costs less than a basic hotel in central Madrid.
Mandarin Oriental Bangkok — 9.4/10 · From €380/night One of the great hotels in Asia. Riverside setting on the Chao Phraya, legendary service, and a history going back to 1879. If you're going to splurge, this is where.
🎯 What to do
Bangkok is overwhelming in the best possible way.
Grand Palace and Wat Pho — Thailand's royal heartland in the heart of the old city. The reclining Buddha at Wat Pho is one of the most striking things in Southeast Asia — the scale of it stops you in your tracks.
Damnoen Saduak floating market — Vendors on wooden boats laden with fruit, noodles and flowers. Get there before 9am before the tour buses arrive and the atmosphere shifts.
Night markets (Chatuchak, Rot Fai) — 15,000 stalls, street food, vintage clothing and live music. Bangkok's night markets are a world of their own — go with no plan and a good appetite.
Thai cooking class — A morning in a local kitchen learning three or four dishes from scratch. Most include a market visit beforehand. The opposite of a tourist trap.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Bangkok is Southeast Asia's best-connected hub. Use it.
Chiang Mai — Thailand's cultural heartland. Temples, mountain trekking, night markets and a completely different pace. One-hour flight from Bangkok.
Koh Samui — White sand, clear water, hammocks. The Thai island experience in its most accessible form. One-hour flight.
Phuket — Thailand's biggest island. Better beaches and more options than almost anywhere else in the country. About 1h20 by air.
Ayutthaya — Thailand's ancient capital, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ruined temples, riverside restaurants, and one of the best day trips in the country. Two hours by train.
