💰 How far does your money go?
A beer in Madrid costs around €3.50. In Fortaleza, the same beer on the beach costs €2.10. The prato feito, a full plate of rice, beans, meat and salad and northeast Brazil's working lunch, costs €3 to €5. Back home, that kind of meal runs to €12 on a menú del día. Brazil is not the cheapest country in South America. Against Madrid prices, the gap is hard to miss.
☀️ The weather
Madrid in June is already warm: 28°C, long evenings, terrazas in full swing. Fortaleza adds the beach: sea water at 28°C and nine hours of sun daily. Recife sits at the same temperatures (29°C) but June is its wettest month, with heavy afternoon downpours. Warm and vibrant rather than a pure beach break. São Paulo runs cooler at 22°C in June, closer to a European autumn. Good for the city. Not for the pool.
🏨 Where to stay
Fortaleza is the strongest beach option for June. Two solid bases on the Meireles waterfront:
Hotel Gran Marquise · 9.6/10 · From €148/night The finest address on the Fortaleza seafront. Panoramic sea views, a spa, and service that makes you think about rebooking before you have checked out.
Hotel Luzeiros Fortaleza · 8.8/10 · From €100/night Beachfront, full-service spa, buffet breakfast and sea views from most rooms. The reliable mid-range option on the strip.
For Recife: Search hotels on Booking.com. Best base is Boa Viagem beach. For São Paulo: Search hotels on Booking.com. Best neighbourhoods: Jardins and Vila Olimpia.
🎯 What to do
Jericoacoara: Three hundred kilometres from Fortaleza. Sand dunes the size of hills, a turquoise lagoon, and sunsets that justify the five-hour bus ride.
Porto de Galinhas: One hour south of Recife. Natural reef pools where tropical fish swim around your feet at low tide. One of the best beaches in South America.
Olinda: Thirty minutes from Recife by bus. A Unesco-listed colonial hilltop town with colourful facades, caipirinhas on the cobblestones, and live forró in every bar.
Ibirapuera Park and MASP: São Paulo's answer to Central Park, followed by the most important art museum in the southern hemisphere. A full day in the city sorted.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Brazil is a continent, not a city.
Jericoacoara: From Fortaleza. Dunes, lagoons and the best kitesurfing in the country. Five hours by bus or a short internal flight.
Olinda: From Recife, thirty minutes. A colonial Unesco town with pastel buildings and the country's most celebrated street carnival.
Iguazu Falls: From São Paulo, a one-hour domestic flight. One of the world's great natural spectacles on the border with Argentina.
The Amazon: From any of the three cities, an internal flight opens up Manaus and the northern rainforest. An entirely different Brazil.
Lençóis Maranhenses: From Fortaleza. A coastal desert national park filled with freshwater lagoons after the rains. Otherworldly.
From Madrid. Non-stop. €548. You have been putting Brazil off for too long.
