Buenos Aires was built by Italian immigrants who never forgot where they came from. The streets echo with it: the pasta bars, the football fervour, the late dinners that run past midnight. ITA Airways flies non-stop from Rome in around 14 hours. June dates are available from €897 return. That is less than a summer weekend in Sardinia with flights and a hotel.

💰 How far does your money go?
Buenos Aires might be the best city in the world for Italians to eat well without watching the bill. A full steak dinner at a Palermo parrilla runs around €27. A pint of local craft beer costs €3.50, against €8 or more in any bar near the Colosseum. A pizza slice, eaten standing at the counter, is €2. Budget travellers spend €50 a day and eat very well. Order an asado with a bottle of Malbec and you will still pay less than dinner at a mid-range Roman trattoria.
☀️ The weather
Rome in June is hot, crowded, and expensive. Temperatures hit 30°C and tourist numbers reach their peak. Buenos Aires in June is its winter: mild, 8–15°C, with clear skies and far fewer visitors. Locals wear a jacket and carry on. You will need layers, but you will have the city almost to yourself, with hotels and theatre tickets at their lowest prices of the year. If you have ever wanted Buenos Aires without the crowds, this is when to go.
🏨 Where to stay
From historic San Telmo to leafy Palermo, Buenos Aires has a neighbourhood for every type of traveller.
Art Factory San Telmo — 8.5/10 · From €35/night A converted warehouse in the heart of San Telmo, with street art on every wall and a social crowd to match. The cheapest way to sleep well in the most atmospheric neighbourhood in the city.
Mine Hotel — 9.2/10 · From €86/night A 20-room boutique in Palermo Soho, built around a garden pool. The kind of place you feel glad to return to after a long day out. Excellent breakfast included.
Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt — 8.8/10 · From €270/night A Belle Époque palace on Alvear Avenue, the most elegant street in the city. Two buildings, two restaurants, a spa, and a wine bar in a cellar that alone is worth a visit. Buenos Aires luxury at its most serious.
🎯 What to do
Buenos Aires rewards wandering. But a few things you should not miss.
Feria de San Telmo — The Sunday antiques market that takes over the neighbourhood's cobbled streets. Old silver, vintage vinyl, leather goods, and enough street food to make lunch plans unnecessary.
MALBA — The Museum of Latin American Art holds one of the best collections of 20th-century art on the continent. A Frida Kahlo self-portrait is in there. Admission is around €6.
La Cabrera — The most famous parrilla in Palermo. Order the ojo de bife, accept the side dishes, and do not rush. Queues form early: arrive before 8pm or go for lunch.
A milonga — The word means both the dance and the venue. Buenos Aires has dozens of milongas where locals dance tango until 3am. Watching costs nothing. Some venues offer beginner classes before the evening starts.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Buenos Aires is a launchpad for some of the most dramatic scenery on the planet.
Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay — One hour by Buquebus ferry across the Río de la Plata. A UNESCO colonial town with cobbled streets, a working lighthouse, and a pace that makes Buenos Aires feel rushed. Easy as a day trip.
Montevideo, Uruguay — 2.5 hours by direct ferry. Uruguay's capital is small, walkable, and unexpectedly good for food. The Mercado del Puerto is where you eat lunch.
Iguazu Falls — Two-hour domestic flight to Puerto Iguazú. One of the true natural wonders of the world: 275 individual waterfalls across 2.7 kilometres of jungle. The Argentine side has the best walking trails.
Mendoza — 1.5-hour flight into wine country at the foot of the Andes. This is where Argentina's Malbec comes from. Tours run daily from the city to the bodegas. The mountains are visible from the vineyards.
El Calafate — Three-hour flight south to Patagonia. The Perito Moreno glacier calves chunks of ice into a turquoise lake. It is one of the few glaciers in the world that is not retreating. Nothing quite prepares you for it.
