💰 How far does your money go?
A pint in London now averages £6.75. In Hong Kong, a local draught beer costs around £4.50 (HK$55). A bowl of wonton noodles at a local cha chaan teng runs about £2.50 (HK$30). A full dim sum lunch — har gow, siu mai, egg tarts — rarely tops £12 per person if you skip the tourist spots. Your daily food and drink budget can sit under £30 without any effort.
☀️ The weather
October in Hong Kong is ideal. Temperatures sit around 24–27°C, humidity drops off, and the skies are mostly clear. November stays warm at 19–23°C, with little rainfall and cool evenings. January and February are the coolest months at 15–18°C. Still T-shirt weather by lunchtime, with long dry spells and sharp, clear days. Winter in Hong Kong is one of the city's best-kept secrets.
🏨 Where to stay
From budget guesthouses in Mong Kok to harbour-view luxury on the island.
Butterfly on Prat — 8.2/10 · From £55/night
Central Tsim Sha Tsui location, clean modern rooms, and easy access to the MTR. Good value in an expensive city.
Hotel ICON — 8.8/10 · From £115/night
Award-winning design hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui East, with harbour views, a rooftop pool, and one of Hong Kong's best hotel restaurants.
The Murray Hong Kong — 9.2/10 · From £200/night
A Michelin Key landmark on Cotton Tree Drive. Stunning heritage architecture, exceptional service, and a rooftop bar that makes the rest of the city look small.
🎯 What to do
Hong Kong is dense, fast, and impossible to cover in one trip. These four are non-negotiable.
Victoria Peak — Ride the Peak Tram up to 552 metres above the city. The panorama of skyscrapers, harbour and green hills is one of the best urban views on earth. Go at dusk.
Temple Street night market — Packed into Yau Ma Tei after 8pm: street food stalls, fortune tellers, fake watches, and the kind of chaotic energy that reminds you you're very far from London. Eat something you can't identify.
Dim sum at a local cha chaan teng — Order by pointing at other people's tables. Har gow, siu mai, turnip cake, and a strong milk tea. Full spread for £8 per person if you find the right place.
Tian Tan Buddha and Tai O — A 34-metre bronze Buddha on Lantau Island, reached by cable car over rolling hills. Combine with Tai O, a stilted fishing village on the island's western tip that feels like a completely different country.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Hong Kong is one of Asia's great connecting hubs. Short hops are easy and cheap.
Macau — 60 minutes by ferry (from HK$160 return). Portuguese colonial streets, egg tarts in Taipa Village, and a casino skyline across the border. Go for one night minimum.
Shenzhen — 14 minutes by high-speed train from West Kowloon. China's tech capital has world-class shopping, wild architecture, and dirt-cheap street food. British passport holders don't need a visa for short stays.
Taipei — Around 1 hour 40 minutes by flight. Night markets, incredible beef noodle soup, and one of Asia's most underrated cities. Often cheaper to fly from Hong Kong than direct from Europe.
Guangzhou — 1 hour by high-speed train. The home of Cantonese cuisine and the original dim sum culture. A day or two changes how you understand the food you just ate in Hong Kong.
Tokyo — 4 hours by flight. Use Hong Kong as the first leg of a longer Asia trip.
£598 non-stop, British Airways, London to Hong Kong. It doesn't get more direct than this.
