☀️ The weather
January and February are deep summer in Santiago. Expect highs around 29–30°C, cool nights around 11–12°C and almost no rain. The city averages just one rainy day across both months. The Andes are visible from the city on clear days and in January the light is sharp and constant.
🏨 Where to stay
Santiago covers every budget, from creative-neighbourhood hostels to five-star towers with mountain views.
Selina Barrio Italia · 8.3/10 · From €35/night

Hotel Eco Boutique Bidasoa · 9.4/10 · From €80/night
One of the best-rated hotels in the city. Quiet, boutique and well-located in Vitacura. Guests come back.
Mandarin Oriental, Santiago · 9.1/10 · From €160/night
Lagoon pool, waterfall garden and a full spa in Las Condes, with Andes views on clear days. The benchmark for Santiago luxury.
🎯 What to do
Santiago is compact enough to cover on foot, with the Andes always visible at the end of the street.
Cerro San Cristóbal: Ride the funicular up through green slopes for a full panorama over the city and out to the mountains. Best at dusk.
Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino: One of the finest pre-Columbian collections in South America. Small enough to do in two hours, good enough to stay twice as long.
La Vega Central: A covered market that has been feeding Santiago for over a century. Go for breakfast: fresh fruit, ceviche, empanadas. The cheapest and most honest food in the city.
Barrio Italia and Barrio Lastarria: Two of the city's most liveable neighbourhoods. Coffee shops, bookshops, murals and restaurants where locals actually eat. Good for an afternoon that becomes an evening.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Santiago is one of South America's best-connected gateways. Most of the continent is reachable from here.
Valparaíso: 1.5 hours by bus. UNESCO-listed port city built across 42 colourful hills above the Pacific. One of the most visually striking cities in South America.
Cajón del Maipo: 1 hour by car. A deep Andean canyon with hiking, thermal pools and scenery that doesn't feel real. No flight required.
Concha y Toro Winery: 30 minutes south of the city. Chile's most famous winery, in the Maipo Valley. Daily tours available.
Atacama Desert: 2 hours north by domestic flight. Salt flats, geysers and night skies clear enough to see the Milky Way. Best as a four to five day side trip.
Torres del Paine, Patagonia: 3 hours south by plane. Granite towers, electric-blue lakes and glaciers. One of the world's great trekking destinations.
