Colombia is not as far as it looks on a map. Culturally, it is closer than almost anywhere you can fly to on this budget. Air Canada connects Madrid and Barcelona to Bogota with one or two stops, from €585 return. A fortnight there, including food, accommodation and a domestic flight or two, costs less than a long weekend in Paris.

💰 How far does your money go?
A menú del día in Bogota, three courses with a drink, costs around €2.50 at a neighbourhood restaurant. A tinto, the short strong black coffee that locals drink all day, is €0.30 from a street vendor. A local beer is about €1.50. Eat where locals eat and your daily food budget stays under €15.
☀️ The weather
Bogota sits at 2,600 metres above sea level, which keeps it mild year-round. Daytime temperatures hover between 19–21°C; nights cool to 9–11°C, so pack a layer. September and January through February are the drier months. October, November and March see more afternoon rain, though showers are brief and clear quickly. None of the months in this deal are bad times to visit.

🎯 What to do
Bogota is dense and rewards time. Give it at least three days.
Cerro de Monserrate — Take the cable car or funicular to 3,152m. Views over Bogota’s sprawling grid are the best in the city, with a colonial church and restaurants at the summit.
Museo del Oro — Over 55,000 pre-Colombian gold pieces in one of the best museums in South America. Free on Sundays.
La Candelaria — The colonial quarter: cobblestone streets, coloured balconies, political murals and small cafes. Go in the morning when it is quietest.
Play Tejo — Colombia’s national sport. Throw heavy metal discs at targets packed with gunpowder. Loud, social and best played with a beer in hand.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Bogota is the starting point. Colombia is the trip.
Medellín — One hour by domestic flight. Transformed in the past two decades, with cable cars over the hillside barrios, excellent nightlife and year-round temperatures of 22°C.
Cartagena — One hour by air. A walled colonial city on the Caribbean coast with colourful houses and warm beaches. The Rosario Islands are a short boat trip away.
Coffee Region — 45 minutes to Pereira or Armenia by domestic flight. Green hills, working coffee farms and charming towns like Salento.
Zipaquirá — One hour by bus from Bogota. The Salt Cathedral is built 200 metres underground inside an active salt mine. An unusual and worthwhile half-day trip.
Air Canada fills quickly at these prices from Spain. Dates run across seven months from both cities. Check which works before they go.
