The Maldives has a reputation for being out of reach. Overwater bungalows, resort prices, champagne floats. The reality is more accessible than the brochures suggest. Fly from Schiphol with Air Ainda, one stop, and return fares start at €583. That's the Indian Ocean for less than most people spend on a city break.

💰 How far does your money go?

The Maldives can be expensive if you go straight to a resort. Stay on local islands and the numbers shift. Breakfast at a hotaa (local teashop) in Male costs around €4: flatbread with tuna, fresh and filling. A full lunch rarely tops €6. A coffee in Amsterdam will cost you more than a meal here. Eat where the locals eat and your daily food budget stays well under €20.

☀️ The weather

September and October are the tail end of the wet season, with temperatures of 27–29°C. Showers are common but short: heavy downpours that clear within an hour, followed by clear skies and warm evenings. October begins to calm down, with improving conditions and calmer seas. November marks the start of the dry season: clearer skies, light northeast winds and the Maldives at its most photogenic. December is peak season for a reason. Warm, dry, perfect visibility in the water. The best months to travel are November and December, but the prices available for September and October make those months worth serious consideration too.

🏨 Where to stay

Three solid options, from city base to full resort.

Champa Central Hotel — 8.0/10 · From €75/night
A well-run hotel in the centre of Male, a short walk from the waterfront and fish market. The right base before heading out to the surrounding atolls.

Sala Boutique Hotel — 8.6/10 · From €140/night
One of the better mid-range options in Male, with thoughtful interiors and attentive service. More character than the average city hotel.

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi — 9.3/10 · From €900/night
Three private islands in South Male Atoll, overwater villas, multiple restaurants and one of the most consistently rated resorts in the country.

🎯 What to do

An archipelago of 1,200 islands. Most of the best things here happen in or on the water.

Snorkel the house reef — Even close to Male, the reefs have turtles, reef sharks and manta rays. No dive certification needed. No boat required. Just a mask and fins.

Sunset dhoni cruise — A wooden Maldivian boat, the Indian Ocean at dusk, dolphins running alongside as the sky turns orange and pink. One of those evenings you remember for years.

Sea of Stars at Vaadhoo Island — At night, the water glows electric blue from bioluminescent plankton. One of the most unusual natural phenomena anywhere. Best seen in September and October, when conditions are right.

Hop to a local island — The public ferry from Male to Maafushi costs around €2. Speedboat to Gulhi takes 20 minutes. White sand, turquoise lagoon, no resort prices. Here's our guide to the best local islands in the Maldives.

🗺️ Where to go from here

Male is a hub, not a final destination. The real Maldives is spread across 26 atolls.

Maafushi — 45 minutes by speedboat or two hours by public ferry (€2). The most-visited local island in South Male Atoll: budget guesthouses, diving schools and good day-trip options to nearby sandbanks.

Gulhi — 20 minutes by speedboat. A tiny island in Kaafu Atoll with a bikini beach, clear lagoon and almost no crowds.

Dhiffushi — 1.5 hours by speedboat. Known for consistent surf breaks and a relaxed, low-key atmosphere.

Rasdhoo — 2.5 hours north by speedboat. Small atoll with good-value guesthouses and one of the best hammerhead shark dive sites in the country.

Thoddoo — 3 hours by public ferry from Rasdhoo. Famous for watermelons and local farming, with excellent snorkelling and practically no tourism infrastructure.
