💰 How Far Does Your Money Go?
New York does not pretend to be cheap. A craft beer at a Manhattan bar costs $9. A classic slice of New York pizza runs $4.50: not quite pizza al taglio from the bar around the corner, but it is the real thing. A sit-down dinner in a casual restaurant lands at $28–35 per main, before the mandatory 20% tip. Budget around $100–120 per day for food, transport, and a cocktail or two. The €331 flight is the value. The city is the reason.
☀️ The Weather
Rome in September is 27°C and still full summer. New York in the same month sits at 22–24°C, with lower humidity and cleaner air. October changes things: temperatures drop to 14–17°C, the trees in Central Park turn amber and gold, and the city looks exactly like it does in every film you have ever seen. Pack layers for October. September needs only a light jacket for the evenings.
🏨 Where to Stay
New York has options at every level, but location matters more here than in most cities. Manhattan is the obvious base.
Pod Times Square – 8.2/10 – From €110/night Compact and well-designed, right in the centre of everything. The best-value base in Midtown for those who plan to spend most of their time out of the room. 👉 Book here

🎯 What to Do
New York rewards those who move fast.
Brooklyn Bridge at Dawn – Walk across from the Manhattan side before the crowds arrive. Thirty minutes. Free. The best view of the skyline you will find at any price.
The High Line – 2.5 kilometres of elevated park built on a disused freight rail line through Chelsea. Art installations, Hudson River views, and the whole city walking alongside you.
Top of the Rock – The observation deck at Rockefeller Center, 70th floor. Unlike the Empire State Building, you can actually see the Empire State Building from here.
A Broadway Show – 41 theatres within walking distance of each other. The world's best productions. Book ahead: last-minute tickets exist but the good shows sell out weeks in advance.
🗺️ Where to Go From Here
New York is the entry point to the East Coast. The Amtrak network connects more than most Europeans expect.
Washington DC – 3 hours by train. The National Mall, the Smithsonian (free), and a city that is smaller, quieter, and more walkable than New York.
Philadelphia – 1 hour 30 minutes by train. The Liberty Bell, cheesesteaks from Pat's or Geno's, and a city that earns far more credit than it usually gets.
Boston – 4 hours by train. Colonial history, Harvard Yard, Fenway Park, and the most compact major city on the East Coast. Salem is 30 minutes north if you are visiting in October.
The Hamptons – 2 hours by Long Island Rail Road. Long Island beaches in early autumn: quieter than summer, still warm enough to walk the shoreline.
€331 non-stop from Rome to New York. September and October. These prices do not last.
