Non-stop, under €30 return. Porto won’t wait long at this price.
Rome in June is beautiful, until the heat hits 40°C and the tourist queues stretch around the block. Porto is different. Atlantic breezes, riverfront bars, port wine cellars, and a cost of living that makes Italy feel expensive. Wizz Air is selling non-stop seats for €15 each way.

💰 How far does your money go?
A beer on a Roman terrace costs €5 to €6. In Porto, the same thing runs about €3. The prato do dia, a set lunch with soup, main course, and a drink, costs €8. A bifana, the local pork sandwich, is €3.50. You can eat well, drink well, and still spend less in a full day than a dinner for two costs back in Rome.
☀️ The weather
Rome in June averages 27°C, with the sun beating down on already packed streets. Porto is cooler at 23°C, softened by Atlantic breezes off the coast. Still warm enough for the beach, cool enough to walk without melting. Evenings by the Douro River are some of the best in Europe at this time of year.

🎯 What to do
Porto rewards those who slow down.
Douro River cruise - Float past port wine lodges and old stone bridges on a traditional rabelo boat. The best views of the city are from the water.
Livraria Lello - One of the most beautiful bookshops in the world, said to have inspired J.K. Rowling. Worth the short queue.
Francesinha - Porto’s signature sandwich: layers of cured meat, smothered in melted cheese and a spiced beer-and-tomato sauce. One of the most uniquely Portuguese things you can eat.
Port wine cellar tour in Vila Nova de Gaia - Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge and spend an afternoon tasting aged port in a centuries-old cellar on the south bank. You can only do this here.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Porto is one of Portugal’s best bases for exploring the north.
Douro Valley - Terraced vineyards, winery visits, and boat trips along one of Europe’s most scenic rivers. 1.5 hours by car.
