💰 How far does your money go?
A full set lunch in Taipei costs around €6, including a main, a side, and a drink. At Raohe Night Market, you can eat yourself full on €8 - dumplings, grilled skewers, pepper pork buns. A local beer at a night market stall costs €2. For the price of an aperitivo and a plate of cicchetti in Milan, you can eat dinner in Taipei and still have change.
☀️ The weather
September in Taipei is warm and humid, with temperatures around 29-32°C. Afternoon rain showers are common but short-lived. Late September brings slightly cooler evenings and less humidity, making it the better window if you want to spend time walking the city on foot. Typhoon season runs through October, though most trips pass without disruption.

🎯 What to do
Street food stalls, ancient temples, hiking trails ten minutes from downtown - Taipei doesn't make you choose.
Taipei 101 Observatory - Once the world's tallest building. The observation deck gives you the full scale of the city and the mountains behind it. Go at dusk.
Raohe Night Market - One of the oldest markets in the city. Come hungry. The black pepper pork buns are just the start.
Beitou hot springs - A short MRT ride north of downtown, this geothermal district has traditional bathhouses set in misty hillside gardens. A proper reset after a day on your feet.
Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan) - Six hundred stone steps, then a sudden view: Taipei 101 rising out of the jungle. Best at golden hour.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Taiwan is small but covers a remarkable amount of ground. Taipei is the gateway, not the whole story.
Jiufen - Lantern-lit hillside village, one hour by bus from Taipei. The narrow lanes and sea views are unlike anywhere on the mainland.
Taroko Gorge - Marble canyon, turquoise river, suspension bridges over deep ravines. Train to Hualien takes two hours, then bus into the gorge.
Tainan - Taiwan's oldest city, dense with temples, street food lanes, and a genuinely slower pace. One hour south on the high-speed rail.
Sun Moon Lake - Taiwan's most photographed lake, ringed by mountains and cycling trails. Three hours from Taipei by bus, or two via Taichung.
Keelung - Coastal city forty minutes from Taipei. Famous for its night market, sea caves, and the colourful Zhengbin Harbour.
€440 buys you nearly two weeks in a country where dinner costs €6 and the hiking starts in the city. September is warm, crowds are manageable, and seats at this price won't last.
