Rome in August is a furnace. The cobblestones bake, the city crowds double, and staying put becomes increasingly hard to justify. Three non-stop Ryanair flights fix that. Ibiza, Mallorca, or Menorca, from €30 return. Less than a round of Spritz in Trastevere.

💰 How far does your money go?
The flight is cheap. The destination keeps pace. A three-course menú del día lunch on any of the islands runs €12–€14, drink included. A beer at a beach bar costs €3–€4. A plate of grilled fish in a harbour-side restaurant comes to around €14. You won't eat cheaper in Rome this summer.
☀️ The weather
Rome in July and August sits at 35–38°C with high humidity and no sea breeze. The city empties for a reason. The Balearic Islands run cooler at 28–30°C, with a constant sea breeze keeping things bearable. Sea temperature holds at 24–26°C throughout. Pack sunscreen, light clothes, and nothing else.
🏨 Where to stay
Three islands, three different price points.
Hostal Jeni (Menorca) — 8.2/10 · From €65/night
Family-run guesthouse in the interior of the island. Quiet, clean, and a short drive from the best beaches.
Hotel Born (Mallorca) — 8.7/10 · From €130/night
A 16th-century palace turned boutique hotel in the centre of Palma. One of the most atmospheric places to stay in the Balearics.
ME Ibiza (Ibiza) — 9.0/10 · From €280/night
Adults-only hotel on Santa Eulalia beach. Rooftop bar, private beach area, and excellent food from start to finish.
🎯 What to do
Three islands that could not be more different.
Caves of Drach, Mallorca — One of the largest cave systems in Europe, with an underground lake and a short boat concert inside. Unmissable.
Cala Macarella, Menorca — A turquoise cove framed by pine trees and white limestone cliffs. No hotels, no beach clubs. Just water.
Dalt Vila, Ibiza — The old walled city above Ibiza Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk up in the evening when the light is golden.
Boat trip to Formentera from Ibiza — A 40-minute ferry to what many consider the best beach in the Mediterranean. Leave early and come back late.
🗺️ Where to go from here
The three islands are close enough to combine two in one trip.
Formentera — 40 minutes by ferry from Ibiza. No cars on the main island, no big resorts, no compromise on beach quality.
Cabrera — A protected island off the south coast of Mallorca. Accessible only by permitted boat. One of the last truly wild spots in the western Mediterranean.
Palma de Mallorca — If you land in Mallorca, the capital is worth two days on its own: the Gothic cathedral, the old town, and the best food scene in the islands.
€30 to swap a sweltering Roman August for a Balearic island. These dates go fast.
