Malaga in July is 30°C and the Playa de la Malagueta is packed end to end. The Maldives in July is also 30°C — but the water is a shade of turquoise that doesn't exist on the Costa del Sol, the beach is mostly yours, and the coral reef is five metres from the shore. Etihad flies you there and back from €470.

💰 How far does your money go?
The Maldives has two price worlds. At a private resort island, a beer costs €8 and dinner €40. On a local island like Maafushi, breakfast at a teashop costs €5: roshi flatbread with tuna and coconut, the same thing locals eat every morning. A full lunch: €7. It is not cheap like Southeast Asia, but it is nothing like the resort prices the brochures suggest.
☀️ The weather
Malaga in June and July is baking: 30°C, intense sun, and beaches so crowded you spend 20 minutes finding a spot. The Maldives sits at the same temperature, but June marks the start of the southwest monsoon — warm, humid days with afternoon showers that pass quickly. Mornings are usually calm and bright, which is exactly when you want to be in the water. Pack light and do not stress the rain.
🏨 Where to stay
Local islands for budget, private islands for the full experience.
Beachwood Hotel Maafushi — 8.2/10 · From €55/night A solid guesthouse on Maafushi island, steps from the beach. The most affordable legitimate entry point to the Maldives.
Bandos Maldives — 9.0/10 · From €180/night A full resort island 30 minutes by speedboat from Malé. House reef, dive centre, and no reason to leave.
Meeru Maldives Resort Island — 9.4/10 · From €280/night One of the highest-rated resorts in the country. Overwater bungalows, pristine beach, and a reef that comes to you.
🎯 What to do
The Maldives is built for the water. Start here.
Snorkelling the house reef — Most guesthouses and resorts sit directly on a reef full of turtles, reef sharks, and rays. No boat needed: just fins and a mask.
Sea of stars, Vaadhoo Island — At night, waves on this beach glow electric blue from bioluminescent plankton. One of the most surreal natural spectacles on the planet.
Sunset dhoni cruise — A traditional wooden dhoni at dusk, almost always with dolphins alongside. It sounds like a cliché because it genuinely delivers.
Island hopping — Each atoll has a completely different feel. Spend a day moving between local islands, sandbanks, and reefs.
🗺️ Where to go from here
The Maldives works well as part of a longer Indian Ocean trip.
Sri Lanka — 1.5-hour flight from Malé. Colonial cities, tea-covered highlands, and a south coast lined with surf beaches.
Kerala, India — 2 hours by plane. Backwater canals, spice markets, and some of the best seafood in the subcontinent.
Other atolls — The Maldives spans 300km north to south. Fly to Addu Atoll or Lhaviyani Atoll for a completely different, far less touristy corner of the country.
At €470 return from Malaga, this does not come around often. Check dates and book.
