💰 How far does your money go?
The Maldives' luxury reputation is real but avoidable. On local islands, a tuna curry at a teahouse costs around €11 and fresh juice is about €3. If you stay on a local island rather than an all-inclusive resort, you can cover food for €30–40 a day. The resort experience costs considerably more, but the flights to get there are the same price regardless.
☀️ The weather
June and July fall in the wet season. Temperatures stay around 28–30°C throughout, the water is warm and calm, and rain arrives in short bursts rather than sustained downpours. Clear skies are common, especially in the mornings. Resort prices drop significantly during this period compared to peak season (November to April), which is part of why the flight fares look this good.
🏨 Where to stay
Most visitors base themselves in Hulhumale, the newer island connected by bridge to Malé, or on a nearby resort island.
Thinking about skipping the resorts entirely? Our guide to the best local islands in the Maldives covers where to stay and what to expect on a real budget.
Arena Beach Hotel - 8.2/10 · From €65/night
A clean, comfortable guesthouse in Hulhumale with direct beach access. Good base for day trips and honest local food nearby.
Kurumba Maldives - 8.7/10 · From €195/night
The oldest resort in the Maldives and one of the most reliable, just 10 minutes by speedboat from the airport. Multiple restaurants and a well-maintained house reef.
Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa - 9.1/10 · From €290/night
Fifteen minutes from the airport by speedboat. Overwater villas, 15 dining venues, a full spa and some of the best house reef snorkelling in the atoll.
🎯 What to do
The Maldives rewards you most if you get in the water.
Snorkel the house reef: Most guesthouses and resorts have a reef accessible from shore. No tour, no boat. Turtles, reef sharks and hundreds of fish from step one.
Dolphin watching at sunset: Spinner dolphins are common in the waters around Malé Atoll. Late afternoon boat trips are short, affordable and reliably good. Go before the light fades.
Sea of Stars at Vaadhoo Island: At night, bioluminescent plankton turn the shoreline glowing blue. June is one of the best months to see it, which lines up directly with these dates.
Old Malé: Small, dense and walkable in a morning. The Grand Friday Mosque, the old fish market and the harbour streets give you a side of the Maldives that no resort brochure shows.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Malé is a compact hub for the wider Indian Ocean.
Baa Atoll: A UNESCO biosphere reserve, 45–50 minutes from Malé by seaplane. One of the world's most reliable spots for manta rays and whale sharks.
Addu Atoll: The southernmost atoll in the Maldives, reached by a short domestic flight. Less developed, more local and some of the best diving in the country.
Sri Lanka: A 90-minute flight from Malé. Tea country, ancient ruins, colonial cities and a completely different pace from anything else in the region.
Kerala, India: Under two hours by air. Backwaters, spice markets and some of the best vegetarian food in South Asia. A natural stopover on the way back.
