💰 How far does your money go?
Barcelona is more expensive than home. A beer on a terrace runs €3-4, a menu del día (three courses with a drink) costs €13-18 at lunchtime, and Sagrada Família tickets are €26. Budget around €70-80 per day for accommodation, food and one or two paid attractions. The beaches are free, the Gothic Quarter costs nothing to walk through, and the best tapas bar experience is simply wandering until something looks right.
☀️ The weather
Barcelona in summer is hot and consistent. June sits around 25-28°C, July and August push towards 30-33°C with barely a cloud in sight. The sea reaches 24-25°C by July. Go in June for slightly fewer crowds; July and August are peak season but peak energy too.
🏨 Where to stay
Book early. Barcelona prices in summer are sharp, and the best-value hotels fill fast.
Hotel Peninsular - 8.2/10 · From €70/night A former Augustinian convent from 1870 with a plant-filled central atrium. On the edge of El Raval, a short walk from La Boqueria, Las Ramblas and MACBA. Strong value for the location.
Barceló Raval - 8.6/10 · From €110/night A circular tower with a rooftop terrace bar and panoramic views over the city. Mid-range price, premium feel. The Raval location puts you close to everything without tourist-area premiums.
Mandarin Oriental Barcelona - 9.2/10 · From €400/night On Passeig de Gràcia, surrounded by Gaudí buildings. Rooftop pool, Michelin-starred dining. If you are going to spend, this is the address.
🎯 What to do
Barcelona rewards both the planner and the wanderer.
Sagrada Família - Gaudí's unfinished basilica turns the interior into stained-glass colour. The most singular building in Europe. Book tickets four to six weeks ahead in summer.
Barceloneta beach - City beach with warm water by July. Golden sand, cold beers at the chiringuito, and the whole of Barcelona doing the same thing you are.
Gothic Quarter - Medieval lanes, Roman ruins and tapas bars that have been serving the same dishes for decades. No entrance fee. Just walk.
Park Güell - Mosaic terraces and surreal stone walkways above the city, with views stretching to the sea. Book timed entry in advance.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Barcelona opens up the whole of Catalonia.
Sitges - 35 minutes by train. A relaxed beach town with a lively old quarter and a famously good nightlife scene.
Montserrat - 1 hour by train and rack railway. A saw-toothed mountain with a Benedictine monastery clinging to the rock face. One of the most dramatic landscapes in Spain.
Costa Brava - 2 hours by bus. Rocky coves, turquoise water and fishing villages like Cadaqués that look nothing like a holiday postcard.
Tarragona - 1 hour by train. Roman amphitheatre overlooking the sea, UNESCO ruins, and none of the crowds of Barcelona.
Two hours from Portugal, from €46. Barcelona in summer does not need a sales pitch. Book it before the seats are gone.
