💰 How far does your money go?
Japan's reputation for being expensive is mostly myth. A bowl of ramen costs around €6. A gyudon (beef bowl) runs €3. A cold beer from a convenience store is €2. Even a conveyor-belt sushi meal rarely breaks €12 per person.
Budget around €50–€75 a day and you can eat extremely well, travel by rail, and still have money left for a standing bar and a whisky.
☀️ The weather
September opens warm and humid, with highs around 28°C in both Tokyo and Osaka. By mid-September the heat softens and October arrives with blue skies, dry air, and temperatures between 15°C and 24°C. It's considered one of the best times to visit Japan. The first autumn foliage begins to appear in parks and temple gardens from late October.

🎯 What to do
Shibuya Crossing (Tokyo) - The world's busiest pedestrian crossing. Stand on the viewing platform above it and watch thousands of people cross simultaneously from every direction.
Dotonbori (Osaka) - Osaka's neon-lit food and entertainment strip. Come hungry: takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu. Follow your nose.
Sensoji Temple (Tokyo) - Tokyo's oldest temple, dating to the 7th century. Most atmospheric at dawn, before the crowds arrive.
Osaka Castle - Rebuilt fortress surrounded by a moat and gardens. The surrounding park is one of the best spots for an autumn afternoon walk in October.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Both cities are gateways to some of Japan's most extraordinary places.
Kyoto - 15 minutes from Osaka by Shinkansen. Temples, bamboo forests, and traditional tea houses. Non-negotiable if you're flying into Osaka.
Nara - 45 minutes from Osaka. Ancient temples and deer that roam freely through the city. A half-day is plenty.
Hakone - 90 minutes from Tokyo. Mountain village with open-air hot springs and views of Mount Fuji on clear days.
Kamakura - 1 hour from Tokyo. Coastal town with a 13-metre bronze Buddha and forested hiking trails above the sea.
Hiroshima - 90 minutes from Osaka by Shinkansen. One of Japan's most profound places to visit, with a peace museum and a vibrant food scene.
€530 return from Milan. Japan doesn't get much cheaper than this. Check the dates before they disappear.
